HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JACKETS?

In this article, BERING advises you on how to clean your jackets regardless of their material.

Properly cleaning a motorcycle jacket is essential to preserve its appearance, durability, and your style.

However, we disclaim any responsibility if you damage your gear due to a misinterpretation or misuse of our advice.

CLEANING LEATHER

1. Preparation: Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools. You will need a soft sponge, a clean microfiber cloth, a mild soap (such as Marseille soap/leather regenerating soap), a leather-specific cleaner, leather conditioner, and a protective coating (optional).
Remove any armor and lining from the jacket/coat.

2. Dusting: Use the soft sponge to gently dust off the leather jacket. This will help remove surface dirt and dust particles.
Pre-test: Before applying any cleaning product to the entire jacket, perform a test on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the product does not cause discoloration or damage.

3. Cleaning: Lightly dampen the soft sponge with lukewarm (demineralised) water, then apply a small amount of mild soap to it. Gently lather the sponge by softly rubbing the leather jacket in circular motions. Avoid using excessive pressure as it may damage the leather. Clean a small section at a time, regularly rinsing and wringing out the sponge.
Stain removal: If your leather jacket has stubborn stains, you can try using a specific leather cleaner. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and stain removal.

4. Rinsing: Once you have finished cleaning the entire jacket, rinse the sponge to remove any soap residue, then wring it out. Lightly dampen the sponge and gently wipe the leather jacket to remove any soap residue.

5. Drying: Pat dry the leather jacket gently with a clean microfiber cloth to remove excess moisture. Never hang the jacket to dry as it may distort its shape. Let it dry flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or any sources of heat.

Conditioning and protection: Once the leather jacket is completely dry, apply a high-quality leather conditioner to restore moisture and suppleness to the leather. Follow the product instructions for application. If desired, you can also apply a protective coating to help prevent future stains and damage.

CLEANING TEXTILE

1. Preparation: Gather all the necessary tools, including a soft brush, a clean cloth, warm water, a mild soap (such as gentle laundry soap), and optionally a stain remover for tough stains.
Remove any armor and detachable liners from the jacket/vest.

2. Dusting: Use a damp cloth to remove surface dust and dirt.
Pre-treating stains: If your jacket has tough stains, gently apply an appropriate stain remover to the affected area. Follow the product instructions and let it sit for the recommended duration.

3. Hand cleaning: Fill a sink or bucket with warm water and add mild soap. Immerse the clean cloth in this soapy solution and wring it out to remove excess water. Gently clean the jacket by softly rubbing the soiled areas. Focus on areas prone to dirt, such as elbows, cuffs, and collar.
CAUTION: Do not scrub vigorously or use anything other than a soft cloth to avoid damaging the fabric.

4. Rinsing: Rinse the clean cloth with clear water and wring it out. Then, go over the jacket to remove any soap residue. Ensure thorough rinsing in all areas.

5. Drying: Gently blot the excess water from the jacket with a clean, dry towel. Do not twist the jacket, as it may distort the fabric. For drying, hang it on a hanger or lay it flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Avoid using a dryer, as it can damage the fabric.

Additional care: If your textile jacket has a removable liner, follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for cleaning it separately. Some textile jackets may also benefit from the application of a waterproofing agent to maintain their water resistance.

CLEANING GORE-TEX

1. Preparation: Very important, refer to the composition label of your product, located on the left side seam, and read the instructions carefully before any operation. Remove any armor and lining of the jacket/coat or trousers.

2. Cleaning: Wash the GORE-TEX garment in the washingmachine at 30 °C. For best results, use a small amount of liquid detergent. Clean it as often as necessary to remove impurities and odors. Choose a gentle cycle with moderate spin. By reducing the spin and therefore the rotational and twisting movements, you will avoid wrinkling or damaging your garment. WARNING: Do not use powder detergent, fabric softener, or chlorine. We do not recommend using stain removers. To remove stains and dirt, we recommend using liquid detergent during a pre-wash. If your machine does not have this function, use a short cycle instead.

3. Rinse: To remove any trace of detergent or dirt, we recommend doing a second rinse cycle.

4. Ironing/Drying: First, refer to the manufacturer's instructions to determine if you can iron the garment. If necessary, we recommend ironing at a low temperature, without steam. Place a cloth over the GORE-TEX garment so it is not in direct contact with the iron. When you clean and dry your GORE-TEX garment, you reactivate its water repellent treatment, an important element for its performance. You can also reactivate this treatment by using a waterproofing agent.
